Resumo:
Balata or bullet tree of Guiana was known as one of the finest forest trees of British Guiana. This paper is based on reports from the 19th and 20th centuries (mainly from George Jenman and Everard im Thurn), publications, newspapers, and correspondence on British Guiana’s balata, a rubber-like material. These references were cross-referenced with objects related to balata that are now preserved at the collection of Economic Botany, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, as well as with contemporary reports from Guyanese Amerindian. By doing this, a more precise image of this less known rubber material from Guyana came forth, as well as the issues and histories behind it, namely the cross-cultural encounters, the objects significance and their context, and how the colony was managed. Despite the fact that balata was seen, during the last years of the 19th century, as an alternative commodity and a possible answer to the sugar crisis, not much was done to improve its trade.

O Grupo de Leitura RESONANCE é um encontro mensal da comunidade académica mais ampla do projeto RESONANCE, dedicado à reflexão sobre um texto ou livro importantes.
RESONANCE Reading Group
Session #7: Make Believe: Parafiction and Plausibility, by Carrie Lambert-Beatty
The RESONANCE Reading Group is a monthly meeting that brings together members of the academic community, colleagues, friends, and enthusiasts of contemporary cultural history to reflect on and discuss a fundamental text or book. It is part of the project RESONANCE — Epistemologies for the Documentation of Affect and Becoming in Cultural Manifestations in Performance (1969-1979). This group meets in person at NOVA FCSH or online, during lunchtime on a weekday. Each participant brings their own lunch, and for in-person sessions, coffee and biscuits are kindly provided by the project.
The seventh session of the RESONANCE Reading Group focuses on the paper Make-Believe: Parafiction and Plausibility, by Carrie Lambert-Beatty, published in the journal October in 2009. With moderation by Afonso Dias Ramos (IHA — NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST), the session takes as its starting point this text, which proposes the concept of ‘parafiction’ as a framework for considering artistic practices that operate between reality and fiction, questioning the mechanisms of credibility and the construction of truth.
To register for this session, please send an email to the project team at resonance.fcsh.unl@gmail.com.
