The results of IN2PAST’s third call for exploratory projects have been revealed. Among the four projects approved for funding by the Associated Laboratory’s jury is “InDigit: The indigenous peoples of the South American Lowlands and the digital transition in European museums”, coordinated by Rodrigo Lacerda (CRIA) and Elisabete Pereira (IHC).

The aim of the project is to develop a prototype digital repository from the collection of the Kamayurá indigenous people (Upper Xingu, Brazil) conserved at the National Museum of Ethnology, in collaboration with Kamayurá consultants. More specifically, the project will examine the differences and similarities between the theories and practices of the Museum and the Kamayurá, in terms of classification systems, access protocols, concepts of ownership, care regimes, and notions of temporality. In addition to the coordinators, InDigit also involves Ângela Salgueiro and Joana Paulino (IHC), João Leal (CRIA) and Paulo Bernardes (LAb2PT).

In addition to the InDigit project, “ARIA: Art, Rhythm, Intonaco, Analytics – An Interdisciplinary Study of King João IV’s Musical Library at Vila Viçosa” was also selected. Led by Isabel Pires (CESEM) and Susana Varela Flor (IHA), and with the participation of IHC researchers Daniel Alves and Joana Paulino, AIRIA focuses on the Musical Library of King João IV in the Ducal Palace of Vila Viçosa and aims to study how the interdisciplinary methodologies of history, art history, science and technology can help preserve and understand cultural heritage.

Also approved were the projects “2LEGACY — Exploring the role of raw materials in Portuguese ceramic crafts to bring Lepierre’s legacy to the future”, coordinated by Mathilda Coutinho and Patrícia Moita (HERCULES), and “The Romanesque-style rural church of Portugal: An initial stride towards the complete digitalization by Heritage-BIM. The case study of S. João de Calvos (Guimarães, 13th Cent. AD)”, coordinated by Fabio Sitzia (also from HERCULES) and Jorge Ribeiro (Lab2PT).

With a maximum duration of 12 months, each project receives maximum funding of 10,000 euros. The IN2PAST Call for Exploratory Projects aims to contribute to the development of scientific knowledge in the fields of cultural heritage, the arts and collective memory, and their intersections with the topics of sustainability and the territory, putting IN2PAST’s research into perspective and conducting it in such a way as to strengthen the use of scientific knowledge for the benefit of society.
