The Programming Historian now available in Portuguese
Feb 1, 2021 | News

The Portuguese version of The Programming Historian was launched, by initiative of the IHC’s Digital Humanities Lab. The Programming Historian is an online platform with peer review on digital methods for History and the Humanities. The announcement was made on 29 January by Daniel Alves, coordinator of the Laboratory, and Jennifer Isasi, member of the publication’s editorial board.
The Programming Historian was created in 2008, in English, and already had a version in French and Spanish. Now, with the push from the IHC, and the collaboration of the Getúlio Vargas Foundation, the Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology (IBICT), the Instituto Superior Técnico and the Federal University of São Paulo, it is also available in Portuguese.
The first lesson to be published — Preserving your research data — was translated by Márcia Cavalcanti (IBICT) and edited by Joana Paulino (IHC – NOVA FCSH), but Daniel Alves announces that “soon more will be made available” and that they are “also open to receive collaborations with original translations or lessons”.
The announcement states that the “aim is to be able to contribute to expanding the digital skills of the community of historians, and humanists in general, who speak Portuguese. In this sense, we will offer tutorials of varied digital methods that could be useful for teaching, research, and publication. ” It also highlights that the Portuguese version “was born on the 25th anniversary of the oldest archive of a Portuguese web page”, the Homepage of Portugal (preserved on the Arquivo.pt platform).
