The IHC collaborated with the organisation of the exhibition 1936-1939: Espanha Fraturada [1936–1939: A Fractured Spain], which marks the 90th anniversary of the start of the “conflict that shaped the 20th century” and which will open on 29 September in the Atrium of Building C on the Avenida de Berna Campus of NOVA FCSH.
In addition to being curated by Pedro Aires Oliveira (with Mariana Alves Pereira), the exhibition also benefited from the scientific consultancy of researcher and photographer Paulo Catrica. Pedro Aires Oliveira explains that the exhibition was put together using material from the NOVA FCSH libraries and reproductions of propaganda posters from both sides, with the aim of “understanding the significance of this historical milestone and its resonance in contemporary consciousness”.
Starting at 6 pm, the exhibition opening will feature a discussion on the literature surrounding this conflict – the memory of which remains very vivid – with Pedro Mexia and Pilar del Río, moderated by Joana Meirim. The event is organised by the Libraries and Documentation Division and the Office of Culture and Society at NOVA FCSH. The exhibition will run until 14 November.
