Pamela Peres Cabreira’s PhD thesis on the demands and resistance of female workers in the factories during PREC was awarded the Francisco Canais Rocha Prize for studies on the labour movement.
With the title ‘Women workers in struggle: Demands and resistance in the factories during the PREC (1974-1975)’, her doctoral research aimed to ‘analyse women workers’ resistance processes during the Portuguese revolutionary period, especially in factories where women were the predominant members of the workforce’ and sought to understand ‘dialectic that permeated various spaces of discussion and decision-making, outlining the courses of action to be taken after 48 years of fascist dictatorship’. Pamela Peres Cabreira‘s work was supported by a Doctoral Research Studentship awarded by the IHC.
The Francisco Canais Rocha Prize was established by the Municipality of Torres Novas and the General Confederation of Portuguese Workers – National Trade Union (CGTP-IN) in honour of the first CGTP-IN coordinator after the 25 April 1974 Revolution, ‘his life journey and his legacy as a fighter for freedom, workers’ rights and democracy’. The jury members for this edition (2024-2025) were: Joana Dias Pereira (IHC – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST), Fernando Rosas (IHC – NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST), and Rogério Paulo Amoroso da Silva (FIEQUIMETAL / CGTP-IN).
The award ceremony will take place in Torres Novas, at the Central do Caldeirão museum, on 25 May at 3pm.
