Mar 5, 2021 | News
Researcher Márcia Gonçalves, who joined the IHC in 2017, will start a new research project at the Leiden University Institute for History, in the Netherlands.
Focusing her research on global history and the comparative and connected histories of European colonialism in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, she received her PhD in 2015 from the European University Institute, with a thesis on the relation between Portugal and its empire and national identity. At the IHC, her work received awards from the Association for Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies and the journal Contemporary European History.
Now, Márcia will begin the new project “Gradients of Europeanness in Colonial Africa: the case of the Portuguese in the Congo Free State (c. 1885-1908)”, funded by a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship. The IHC wishes her the best of luck for this new academic and professional endeavour, and will continue to count on her precious collaboration in the development of the thematic line “Colonialism, Anti-Colonialism, and Post-Colonialism”.
