George Souvlis

Biography
Ι have completed my PhD at the European University Institute in Florence (Department of History and Culture). I have taught courses in modern and contemporary Greek and European history and sociology at Democritus University of Thrace (2019-2020) and at the University of Ioannina (2020-2023).
My research interests lie in the fields of fascist studies, the history of ideas, and historical sociology. My most recent publications include the following books/special issues: Voices on the Left (2019), Back to the ’30’s?: Recurring Crises of Capitalism, Liberalism, and Democracy (edited jointly with J. Rayner, S. Falls, and T. Nelms, 2020), The Normalization of Far-Right Discourse in Greece (edited jointly with R. Vasilaki, 2021), “Re-assessing the Metaxas Dictatorship (1936-1941): Greek Fascism or Old-Style Authoritarianism?”, Fascism 11/2 (November 2022) (co-edited with A. Kallis), Radical Journalism (co-edited with S. Farrell and E. Siapera, 2023), Duty to Revolt: Transnational and Commemorative Aspects of Revolution (co-edited with A. Karatzogianni, 2023), Τhe Alternative Right in Greece (2025), Politics of Liberation. Conversations with Theory and History (co-edited with R. Vasilaki) as well as a series of articles in the journals Praksis, Journal of Contemporary Central and Eastern Europe, Fascism. Journal of Comparative Fascist Studies, Práticas da História, and Critical Education.

This initiative forms part of the visit to Lisbon by historian Pedro Cerdeira (University of Geneva), winner of the fourth Amílcar Cabral Prize.
Desconstruir o Colonialismo: Entre Tradição e Revolução
Iniciativa integrada na visita de Pedro Cerdeira (Universidade de Genebra) a Lisboa, o vencedor da quarta edição do Prémio Amílcar Cabral.
Na primeira parte da sessão, numa aula pública, o historiador Victor Barros vai falar sobre a relação entre anti-colonismo e imaginários revolucionários, sobretudo a partir do caso da luta de libertação nas colónias portuguesas. Na segunda parte, três doutorandos do IHC vão apresentar o seu trabalho, com comentário de Pedro Cerdeira. A tarde culmina com uma palestra do premiado acerca do artigo “Rural Schools, Farm Co-Operatives and the Late Colonial Recreation of African Rurality in Guinea-Bissau”, publicado no e-Journal of Portuguese History em 2025.
O Prémio Amílcar Cabral é promovido pelo Instituto de História Contemporânea e pelo Padrão dos Descobrimentos / Lisboa Cultura.
