Third edition of the congress aiming to enhance the importance of local history in contemporary historiography. Call for papers open until 7 June.

3rd International Congress on Local History:

Concept, Practices and Challenges in Contemporaneity

Following the challenge posed to researchers and scholars in its first two editions (Cascais, 2017 and Setúbal, 2018), the 3rd International Congress on Local History proposes to continue the objectives then outlined, seeking to promote a space of interdisciplinary and comparative sharing and reflection through at debate on problems, approaches, methodologies and research practices, with a view to enhancing the importance of local history in contemporary historiography. Likewise, it maintains its purpose of contributing to a debate around its concept, problematizing an issue that is to be clarified in Portuguese historiography.

Local history, since the middle of the nineteenth century, has aroused the interest of researchers and inquisitors who study the past of a certain region or community with the purpose of restoring collective and individual memory. At the scientific level, this reality can be seen in the multiplication of master and PhD theses on topics related to local history, fostering a wealth of innovative scientific knowledge and a new wave of historians interested in working on themes from different regions.

The last two editions have shown the multiplicity of studies on the most diverse topics within local history, and invited the participants to think about their practice, considering their problems, methodologies and relevance of local and regional analyses for contemporary historiography, both worldwide and national wide. In addition to presenting an opportunity for the dissemination of research on a broader “stage” than the community in which they are involved, these meetings have also allowed the creation of a network of contacts among local historians, who use the Congress to exchange ideas on research processes in the field.

In this sense, the 3rd International Congress on Local History proposes to continue and maintain its annual and itinerant character, creating the conditions for a more in-depth reflection and a permanent dialogue between the local historical investigation and the communities where these investigations are inserted.

Call for Papers

The opening of communication proposals for all participants aims at disseminating local and regional historical work and the sharing of challenges as well as obstacles encountered by researchers throughout their research process. In the same way, it seeks to reflect on what Local History is and its diverse potentialities, in particular its close relationship with the communities it addresses.

In addition to the usual thematic axes, which have challenged researchers and scholars to present their works, the third edition of the International Congress on Local History will take place in a year that will certainly be marked by the beginning of the reflections around three important periods of world and Portugal history : the approach of the bicentennial of the Liberal Revolution of 1820; the analysis of the period that followed the end of World War I and the evocation of the 80th Anniversary of the beginning of World War II. In this sense, this edition also invites scholars who are dedicated to these themes to present their contributions.

Proposals for communication about Local History in contemporary times can be conceived around the following thematic axis, without excluding others correlated:

– Reflections on theory and methodology of local history;
– What it means and represents this discipline;
– History and Community;
– The importance of local history in secondary and higher education;
– Themes and researches involving the history of a region (18th-20th centuries);
– Municipalities and Local Power;
– The role of local institutions and associations;
– Liberalism on a regional and local scale: “expressions of its emergence, ruptures and resistance”.
– Post-war in regional and local space: changes and continuities.

Proposals (250/300 words) must be accompanied by a title and a brief biography of the author (maximum 100 words). Communications accepted will result in 15-minute presentations.
