Isabel Baltazar was this year’s winner of the History of Europe Prize — Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation for her book Repensar Portugal e a Ideia de Europa. Pensamento Contemporâneo [Rethinking Portugal and the Idea of Europe. Contemporary Thought], awarded by the Portuguese History Academy.
The book, published in 2019 by Theya Editores with the support of IHC and the Municipality of Tomar, where the author is from, “intends to show the presence of the idea of Europe in contemporary thought” and highlights “the Europeanity of Portugal and Portugal’s position vis-à-vis Europe ”. The preface was authored by Eduardo Lourenço.
Last year, the same prize was given to Fernando Rosas, for the book Salazar e os Fascismos. Ensaio breve de história comparada [Salazar and Fascisms. Brief essay of comparative history] (Tinta da China, 2019). The award ceremony is scheduled for 9 December 2020.
