Tourism in Yugoslavia: Relaxing, Partying and Romancing, 1950-1960

With the development of the mass tourism on the Yugoslav side of the Adriatic in the late 1950s, thousands of people from the Western and Eastern Bloc, visited Yugoslavia and mingled with Yugoslavs, both locals and those who travelled from all over Yugoslavia for summer holidays. Therefore, the beach was a place for the ultimate comparison between different political systems, and the success of their modernization and liberalization. In that way, with the discovery of mass tourism, Yugoslavia joined the Mediterranean club of dolce farniente lifestyle, where everything is possible and allowed, including “relaxing, partying, sporting, celebrating, and romancing.” The most visible consequence of these changes was “freedom of behaviour and exaltation of the body.”

Anita Buhin is a post-doctoral researcher at the IHC — NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST. She obtained her PhD at the European University Institute in 2019, and after that she collaborated as a researcher at the Centre for Cultural and Historical Research of Socialism at the Juraj Dobrila University of Pula. She is mostly interested in cultural history of socialist Yugoslavia in Mediterranean context, focusing on the relations of popular culture and tourism. She recently published her first monograph. “Yugoslav Socialism ‘Flavoured with Sea, Flavoured with Salt’: Mediterranization of Yugoslav Popular Culture in the 1950s and 1960s under Italian Influences” (Srednja Europa: Zagreb 2022.).

Sobre o ciclo:
Contando com a participação de conferencistas provenientes de diferentes universidades internacionais, assim como de investigadores do IHC dedicados ao estudo de realidades nacionais e transnacionais muito diversas, este ciclo de conferência visa promover o interesse pela história contemporânea mundial na universidade e na sociedade portuguesas.

Integrando os cursos de doutoramento da NOVA FCSH, mas decorrendo em diferentes instituições da cidade de Lisboa, as sessões são abertas à participação de qualquer interessado, sem necessidade de inscrição prévia, ainda que as sessões que decorrem na Culturgest requeiram obtenção prévia de ingresso junto daquela instituição (gratuito).
