Datas e Horários: 5 a 9 de Julho | das 17h00 às 20h00

Objectivos:

Games, Society & Culture is a 15-hour intensive course, addressed to undergraduates, graduate students and the general public alike. It is theory-light and debate-oriented, tackling prevalent issues of today’s society through a very popular practice: gaming. The course offers an iteration through the history of games from Ancient times to Modernity, and an exploration of contemporary themes through the lenses of gaming. Games are taken in a broad sense from board-games and traditional games to card games, roleplay and even video-games. The themes addressed throughout the course include nationalism, colonialism, gender, religion and neo-liberalism.

Programa:

  1. What is a game? The history of games
  2. Discrimination in and through roleplaying games
  3. Exploring the cartographies of board games
  4. Games versus religion
  5. Capitalism, liberalism and video-games
