History is at School! — New educational programme from the IHC
Dec 2, 2025 | Highlights, News

The IHC has launched a new programme, History is at School! [A História está na Escola!], which in 2026 will be dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic. The overall aim of the programme is to familiarise students at different levels of education with historical research and the tools of the historian, presenting key themes in global and Portuguese history in an interactive way.
The History in the Public Sphere Programme team, which oversees these activities, aims to foster discussion around historiographical methodology, from documentary research to narrative, offering training to teachers and students on different topics related to the uses of the past, memory, citizenship, governance and the contemporary challenges of the discipline. The 2026 special edition, on the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, has the specific aim of familiarising students with the principles and values of democratic citizenship, offering schools a set of training and recreational activities on the history of Portuguese constitutions from 1820 to 1976.
Among the many activities suggested are topical sessions on the history of Portuguese constitutions, practical workshops on historiographical methodology, guided tours, and teaching resources. The teaching resources will be developed in collaboration with the research project team “Revolution, towards the history of the concept. Analysing Portuguese parliamentary debates, 1821-2024“, coordinated by José Neves and funded by FCT.
The IHC invites anyone interested in organising activities within the scope of this programme to contact us at historiapublica.ihc@fcsh.unl.pt.
