Tracing Snapshots
Domestic memories, colonial images and film production in the Iberian context
Overseas — A film by Carmen Bellas and Alberto Berzosa
Screening followed by a conversation with filmmakers and researchers Alberto Berzosa (Universidad Carlos III de Madrid) and Lee Douglas (IHC — NOVA FCSH / IN2PAST).
Overseas is a documentary pieced together with footage shot by families who lived in the colonies, provinces and territories that were under Spanish rule between 1940 and 1975. A succession of snapshots of those who moved to another country to set up new homes. The album turns its pages and at certain moments the projection stops, the editor rewinds, zooms in, analyzes, and looks for echoes within these domestic visual traces.
What themes recur? How are nature, work, women and raw materials filmed? What is the position of others in the frame? What do these domestic visual traces tell us about the colonial legacy in the present?.
Initiative organised by IHC’s History and Image Workshop, the project Militant Imaginaries, Colonial Memories (MSCA-895197), and TRACTS Network (COST 20134).
