Biography

Augusto José dos Santos Fitas, who has a degree and doctorate in Physics, an aggregate in History of Ideas in Physics, Professor of Physics and History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Évora, has been retired since May 2012. He was a founding member of the Centre for the Study of the History and Philosophy of Science (CEHFCi) and is currently an Emeritus Researcher at the IHC.

Although his work interests in the field of Physics were initially orientated towards the study of the generation and propagation of seismic waves, he has always been active in the History and Philosophy of Science, a scientific area that has been his “major area” of research for the last fifteen years. He has carried out research into the History and Philosophy of Science (Physics and Maths) (18th to 20th centuries) and, in particular, the History of Science in Portugal (18th to 20th centuries), paying particular attention to Physics and scientific institutions in the 20th century.
