The biography of King Manuel II, written by João Miguel Almeida and published by Manuscrito, was the winner of the Grémio Literário Award 2022, presented on 21 April last, during the celebrations of the 175th anniversary of the Guild.
The jury considered it to be “a work that combines the rigour of historical research with narrative fluidity and allows us to understand the connection between personal life stories and intricate political intrigues. These explain the lived environment and the political path of King Manuel II, during his brief reign and then during his long exile, between the various monarchic factions, as well as his loyalty to Portugal”.
In addition to this book, also the collection “A Revolução de 1820. Leituras e Impactos” [The Revolution of 1820. Readings and Impacts], of which Daniel Alves was one of the authors, also received an honourable mention. The other authors were Miriam Halpern Pereira (who received the award), Ana Cristina Araújo, Daniel Alves, Jorge Fernandes Alves, José Luís Cardoso, Maria Alexandre Lousada, and Zília Osório de Castro.
In 2018, IHC researchers Margarida M. Ramalho and Leonor Sá were also awarded by the same institution, for their respective books “Thomaz de Mello Breyner — Relatos de uma Época. Do final da Monarquia ao Estado Novo” [Thomaz de Mello Breyner — Portraits of an era] and “Infamia e fama: o mistério dos primeiros retratos judiciários em Portugal 1869 -1895” [Infamy and fame: the mystery of the first judicial portraits in Portugal 1869-1895].
