Tour of “Resistant Women” ends in Portugal
Nov 3, 2022 | News

The travelling exhibition “Resistant Women”, on the role of women as active agents of resistance during the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War, opens tomorrow, 4 November, at the Municipal Library of Alcântara, with the support of the IHC.
This is an initiative of the Association for the Recovery of Historical Memory (Spain), through the European project “Women as an element of resistance in the memory of Europe” and includes case-studies from Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Belgium, Croatia and Portugal. Militia women, politicians, rearguard workers, volunteers, warriors, etc., “contributed to the struggle for freedom and anti-fascism with dignity, solidarity and courage”, as can be read on the exhibition’s official website. The exhibition aims to “do justice to their memory and offer the visiting public a global view of the real importance of their actions in our history.”
For its Portuguese edition, the exhibition had the participation of the IHC’s Thematic Line Uses of the Past, and new texts written by Xurxo Ayán. The opening session will feature interventions by researchers Raquel Afonso, Paula Godinho and Giulia Strippoli, from the IHC, and Laura Muñoz Encinar, from the Instituto de Ciencias del Patrimonio (CSIC).
