Portable closets: Secrets and lives since gay liberation

The double life and the closet tend to be associated with a time before the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in 1967 and the Gay Liberation Front call to ‘come out’ in the early 1970s. Though the social and cultural terrain in Britain has certainly shifted, this l talk shows how and why various kinds of secret have continued to matter to many queer people and have made their lives liveable. Based on new research and interviews for the recent ‘Queer Beyond London’ project, Matt Cook looks at how people’s backgrounds, families, and the places they live have made a portable closet a necessary, desirable and even enjoyable queer accessory in the years since gay liberation.

Matt Cook is Professor of Modern History at Birkbeck College, University of London. He is a cultural historian specializing in the history of sexuality and the history of London in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In addition to five edited collections on LGBTQ histories, he is author of two books: London and the Culture of Homosexuality, 1885 – 1914 (2003) and Queer Domesticities: Homosexuality and Home Life in Twentieth-Century London (2014). Queer Beyond London is co-authored  with Alison Oram (2022).

O IHC GenLab, Laboratório de História Contemporânea dedicado à investigação em Estudos de Género visa a criação de um espaço interdisciplinar de intercâmbio e debate sobre História de género, sexualidades, família e trabalho, que conta com um encontro mensal. Cada sessão consistirá na análise e discussão de artigos de referência, bem como da apresentação de uma pesquisa em curso, a cargo dos investigadores e investigadoras do IHC — NOVA FCSH, convidados/as ou que tenham sido seleccionados/as por CFP.

Este laboratório tem como objectivo a promoção da discussão destas temáticas, assentes em diversas abordagens, sejam elas teóricas, metodológicas ou empíricas. Pretende-se estabelecer o diálogo entre diferentes investigadores e investigadoras, investigações e distintas áreas disciplinares e contribuir para o estudo, reflexão crítica e divulgação dos diversos temas. O laboratório terá uma periodicidade mensal e será aberto à comunidade académica e público em geral que queira participar nas discussões sobre este tema.

Convidam-se as investigadoras e os investigadores cujas investigações se relacionem com Estudos de Género a apresentarem as suas propostas de comunicação. Para tal, deverão enviar nome do proponente, título, resumo (até 300 palavras), 3 a 5 palavras-chave e uma pequena nota biográfica (50 palavras) acompanhada da afiliação institucional para: genlab@fcsh.unl.pt.
