Debate organised in the framework of the exhibition Freetown, by Samson Kambalu, at Culturgest. Open from 2 October to 6 February.
Situacionisms, Cinemas and Other Stories
Samson Kambalu‘s films and installations compel us to take a comparative look at the different ways of thinking in African and European territories, examining the way in which images and history are conceived and produced. Taking as our background the exhibition of this artist in our galleries, we will join three researchers from the Institute of Contemporary History (NOVA FCSH) together in a debate, encouraging us to think about the questions raised by his work: Ricardo Noronha, a researcher in the area of social and economic history, who is also interested in Situationism, a movement that serves as a major reference for Kambalu; Raquel Schefer, a film director and programmer, and a lecturer at the University Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris 3, who has conducted research into African cinema and the African diaspora; and Catarina Laranjeiro, who will also act as the moderator in this debate.
This debate is part of the activities of IHC’s thematic line Modern Mediations: Arts, Technology, and Communication at NOVA University Lisbon.
Curatorship:
Catarina Laranjeiro, Liliana Coutinho e Rui Lopes
