1st Conference Memory for All: History, Heritage and Community

The connections of memory, heritage and identity as contributing factors for social cohesion and community building have been confirming the main role of education and knowledge for research in different contexts and backgrounds as well as fostering local and community identity.

In Portugal, there has been a growing expansion and acknowledgement of research projects and social and cultural initiatives which resort on memory and foster citizens’ participation through the co-creation and dissemination of knowledge. These have been promoted either by the academy as well as NGOs, archives, libraries, municipalities and informal groups of citizens.

These initiatives and projects take multiple forms and scientific and institutional frameworks. With more visibility within the arts, humanities and social sciences (e.g. oral history projects, museums, journalism) and local/ regional associative actions for heritage rescue and preservation, it has been also important within the domains of neurosciences, psychology, human development and biodiversity.
The 1st Conference Memory for all seeks to gather the leading figures of projects, initiatives and actions committed to identifying, organising, curating, researching and/or sharing memory and communities from and for communities.

By gathering different disciplines and fields of action around memory and community — comprising social and historical memory, cognitive memory, genetic memory and digital memory — we seek to collectively think about the roles of academia, social/cultural institutions and citizens as agents of influence in heritagization processes and memory construction and preservation.

Sharing experiences, projects and initiatives — closed, ongoing or yet to take place — related to community history/memory
Debating community engagement strategies and their impacts in the formation of identity and personal and collective valuing
Questioning the role of history, heritage and memory in social inclusion, urban regeneration and community cohesion processes
Discussing and establishing good practices for the recording, digitising and sharing of oral testimonies and documentation from private owners
Thinking about curation, preservation and digital infrastructures within the framework of community archives
Fostering education within the fields of oral history, local history, public history and community archival with public engagement strategies.
