In a partnership with the Padrão dos Descobrimentos / Lisboa Lisboa, the IHC has opened the competition for the fourth edition of the Amílcar Cabral Prize, which is intended ‘to honour an article of historical research that deals with any topic or issue relating to the history of anti-colonial resistance and colonial empires’.
People of any nationality who have completed a doctorate in the last three years can apply for this prize, and are eligible for a research stay in Lisbon in 2026. Previous winners of the prize include Ricardo Pérez Haristoy (a Chilean historian), Sakiru Adebayo (a Nigerian specialist in African literature), and Esmat Elhalaby (an American historian of Palestinian descent).
In this edition of the prize, the jury will be made up of Manuela Ribeiro Sanches (Institute of Contemporary History), Benedito Machava (Yale University) and Natalia Telepneva (University of Strathclyde). Applications for the fourth edition are open until 30 September and the Prize’s rules can be consulted here.
