The project “Portuguese inmates in Nazi Concentration Camps”, coordinated by Fernando Rosas, was approved by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) within the scope of the special support programme “Portugal and the Holocaust: research and memory”, the FCT announced last Friday.

The project aims to, in addition to continuing the research already underway at the IHC, create an online platform with the names, life stories and documentation of the Portuguese who were imprisoned in concentration camps in the Third Reich, with the help of our Digital Humanities Lab.

In addition to Fernando Rosas, the research team also includes Ansgar Schaefer, also an IHC researcher, as well as António Carvalho, director of the National Museum of Archaeology, and Cristina Clímaco, professor at the University of Paris 8. The project will last for one year and has an approximate budget of 33 thousand euros.

In this same programme, were also approved the projects “Refuge, Migration and Holocaust, 1936-1945”, proposed by the Diplomatic Institute of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with researcher Helena Pinto Janeiro as part of the team; and “MemoMarranos – Document mapping of the “marranos” in the 20th century”, proposed by the University of Coimbra and in which the researcher Fernando Tavares Pimenta will collaborate.
