In search of the gender signal: introduction to stylometric approaches
Helena Bermúdez Sabel (JinnTec)
Stylometry is the statistical analysis of style and it relies on the existence of a stylistic fingerprint, first theorised by Polish scholar Wincenty Lutosławski in 1897. A stylistic fingerprint is intrinsic to a person, but it depends on elements that escape the author’s control. This fingerprint is difficult to detect by human observation, but it can be quantified. One of the most common applications of stylometry has concerned author recognition, but stylometric analyses have been applied successfully to other research questions involving the evolution of the literary style of an author, the identification of literary movements and periods or genre classification. Many studies have pointed out how gender is an important factor when analysing stylistic features and there are a number of experiments concerning gender attribution and the retrieval of gender markers. In this presentation we will explore certain stylometric methods to tease out gender makers in literary corpora in Romance languages. One of the tools that will be used during the development of the talk is TXM. A sample dataset and instructions will be provided in case participants want to experiment after (or during) the talk, but its installation beforehand is not required.
