Paula Albuquerque in exhibition in Amsterdam

The exhibition Eye(s) Open. New Perspectives on Colonial Film Heritage, which features a work by Paula Albuquerque, opened at the Eye Filmuseum in Amsterdam on 3 April and runs until 6 September this year.
Paula Albuquerque is exhibiting her film installation Becoming Opaque, which de Volkskrant describes as one of the exhibition’s most striking pieces; in it, the IHC researcher “relentlessly unleashes streams of multicoloured pixels onto Julien’s practices, a digital wave that snatches participants from their hands and hides them from view”.
In the exhibition, “eleven artists respond to Eye’s collection of some 2,000 colonial-era films from formerly occupied regions in Indonesia and Suriname”, prompting visitors to “look directly into the eyes of the racist prejudices present in the films”, with a result that is “as painful as it is striking”, according to de Volkskrant.
