Detalhes do Evento

Workshop, organized within the framework REWIND project, on the development of methods to go from paper or digitized sources to TEI-encoded plays.

Towards the computational analysis of a peripheral literary tradition:
The case of Alsatian theater

Pablo Ruiz Fabo (Université de Strasbourg)

Dialect theatre in Alsatian (a set of Germanic varieties spoken in Alsace, Eastern France) is a rich tradition that, unlike the major European dramatic traditions, has not been explored so far using computational means. Our project, called MeThaL — Towards a Macroanalysis of Theater in Alsatian is creating the first large publicly available corpus of Alsatian theater encoded in TEI (Text Encoding Initiative). In this workshop, we first present our corpus development method to go from paper or digitized sources to TEI-encoded plays. Then we present our work on character analysis and emotion analysis on the material.

About the speaker:
Pablo Ruiz Fabo is an Assistant Professor in Computational Linguistics at the University of Strasbourg. He works on applying automatic linguistic annotation in Digital Humanities scenarios. Recent projects include work on resource creation for the analysis of theatre in Alsatian (MeThaL and Thealtres projects). He has also worked with literature in Romance languages (DISCO project). He is part of the steering committee of the Plotting Poetry network and the Digital Literary Stylistics SIG of ADHO.
