The Modern State of Israel — a socio-political analysis

Aims:
The object of this course is to provide a basic understanding of modern Israeli politics, culture, and identity through lectures, discussions, and projects. Starting with the Zionist ideology and nation building enterprise through the challenges of absorption and modernization of the state and society, we will also survey the rise of Palestinian national movement; Israeli occupation and settlement projects; the role of ethnicity in Israeli politics; immigration and Ashkenazi-Mizrahi relations; the Arab minorities in the Jewish state; the impact of the Holocaust; global political developments as a factor in the changing Israeli economy and politics; the social and cultural divisions in Israel; and, finally, challenges facing Israel today.

- The socio -Political Mosaic of Israel;
- From farming to “start-up-nation”.
