Diogo Ramada Curto — In Memoriam
Apr 13, 2026 | News

The Institute of Contemporary History deeply mourns the passing of Diogo Ramada Curto (1959–2026) and joins NOVA FCSH in expressing its condolences.
As a historian and academic, Ramada Curto made a decisive contribution to the opening up and internationalisation of the field of historiography in Portugal over recent decades. He supervised researchers at the IHC, such as Inês Brasão and Tijl Vanneste, and, together with our colleague Jorge M. Pedreira, helped to revitalise Historical Sociology in the country. He was also director of the doctoral programme in Globalisation Studies, with which the IHC has been associated since its inception. He was also an enthusiast of the journal Práticas da História – Journal on Theory, Historiography and Uses of the Past, in which he published, among other things, an important essay on Historical Sociology, which can be read here. As director of the National Library of Portugal, he enthusiastically welcomed all the initiatives that the IHC organised there during his tenure.
