FCT’s PhD Studentships

Highlights, IHC, Opportunities

Deadline (IHC): 15 March 2026

Deadline: 31 March 2026
Place of work:
Institute of Contemporary History — NOVA FCSH / University of Évora
Institution:
Foundation for Science and Technology

The Institute of Contemporary History (IHC), with branches at NOVA University Lisbon and at the University of Évora, is receiving expressions of interest, as host institution, in applications to the Call for the Award of Studentships for Doctoral Research promoted by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, both in the Regular Line of Application and in the Specific Line of Application in a Non-academic Environment.

Joining the IHC means being a member of an institution with a multi-cultural, collaborative and cultural intervention environment, with around 180 researchers, a quarter of whom are doctoral candidates. The IHC is part of IN2PAST, the Associate Laboratory for Research and Innovation in Heritage, Arts, Sustainability and Territory, which brings together seven research units from five different universities, with a strong interdisciplinary dynamic in the field of cultural heritage and uses of the past — among others.

The IHC offers its doctoral candidates an Advanced Studies Platform, a common space for the development of doctoral research and the sharing of experiences between PhD candidates, which provides an environment for research and international circulation with partner institutions. IHC doctoral candidates are Integrated Researchers of the Institute, with access to financial support and the right to vote in its General Assembly.

As a research unit in the fields of Moderna and Contemporary History that works on a wide range of topics, the IHC regularly collaborates with the media, museums, archives, municipalities, and schools — activities that are part of the History in the Public Sphere Programme. We therefore encourage the submission of proposals that fit into the Specific Line of Application in a Non-academic Environment.

The IHC is associated with several doctoral programmes, namely the PhDs in History; Anthropology; Gender Studies; Modern Literature and Cultures; and Globalisation Studies at the NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities; and the PhDs in History and Philosophy of Science and in History at the University of Évora. The IHC also encourages applications from doctoral students interested in applying digital humanities tools to their research (see the IHC’s Digital Humanities Lab).

Applicants should send the following documents and information to Rosa Fina at ihc.concursos@fcsh.unl.pt:

  1. Detailed Curriculum vitae;
  2. Motivation letter, expressing how the research project fits with the IHC and indicating the supervisor, who must be an IHC Researcher (in Portuguese or English; max. 5000 characters, spaces included);
  3. Title and summary of the PhD project (in Portuguese or English; max. 5000 characters, spaces included);
  4. Doctoral programme in which the applicant is enrolled or to which is applying;
  5. The FCT’s line of application (Regular / Non-Academic Environment).
