Chilean historian Ricardo Pérez Haristoy, winner of the third edition of the Amílcar Cabral Prize, will be in Lisbon next week for two public events at the National Library of Portugal.
On 19 March, he will present the lecture ‘Solidaridad internacional desde el exilio: chilenos y argentinos en Mozambique (1975-1986)’ [International solidarity from exile: Chileans and Argentinians in Mozambique (1975-1986)] on the activities of Latin American exiles as international technical and professional workers in Mozambique, relating their experiences of transnational militancy with the socialist project under the coordination of FRELIMO. The lecture is free and open to everyone interested in the topic.
On 20 March, he will lead the research seminar ‘El Archivo del Terror y la Guerra Fría en el Cono Sur’ [The Archive of Terror and the Cold War in the Southern Cone]. The session aims to point, in the context of the dynamics of historical interaction between Chile and Paraguay, to the contrast that the Popular Unity government represented for General Alfredo Stroessner, and how the coup d’état in Chile was a moment of strengthening the link between the armed forces that later unleashed Operation Condor. In this case, registration is required by emailing raquelribeiro@fcsh.unl.pt.
Ricardo Pérez Haristoy received the Amílcar Cabral Prize for his paper ‘South America’s Transnational Solidarity with Southern Africa Chilean and Argentine Exiles as Cooperators in Mozambique, 1976–1986’, co-authored with Mario Ayala in the Journal of Global South Studies. This award is organised by the Institute of Contemporary History and the Monument to the Discoveries / EGEAC and aims to promote ‘scientific research and public debate on anti-colonial resistance and the colonial processes that mark world history from the 15th century to the present day’.
