Call for applications for the recruitment of a position for an Assistant Professor in the subject area of History with a relevant CV in History of the Long Nineteenth Century (society, politics, economy), at the NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities (NOVA FCSH). Once hired, the university academic teaching member will be made an integrated member of the Institute of Contemporary History Research Unit, and in the Associated Laboratory for Research and Innovation in Heritage, Arts, Sustainability and Territory and is expected to develop their research and teaching activities in accordance with the strategic objectives of the said Research Unit, Associated Laboratory and the History Department of NOVA FCSH. The successful candidate will also contribute to strengthening and deepening the ”Society and Politics” and “Memory and Heritage” strategic cohesion pillar(s) of NOVA FCSH. The successful candidate must demonstrate in-depth knowledge and experience in the period of the ‘long nineteenth century’ (from the French Revolution to the First World War) in structural dimensions of economic, social and/or political history. The candidate will also be expected to teach undergraduate courses in the History Department of NOVA FCSH on topics related to the Portuguese 19th century. In both research and teaching, the candidate must present a critical approach to dominant narratives about the Portuguese 19th century, questioning, in particular, the centrality of the major Western European countries in the historiographical narrative, the backwardness/progress dichotomy and going beyond the limits of methodological nationalism.
