The first issue of Práticas da História: Journal on Theory, Historiography and Uses of the Past was published in July 2015, under the direction of José Neves, following a joint effort by the Institute of Contemporary History and CHAM — Centre for Humanities. The journal is therefore celebrating its tenth anniversary.
With 19 issues published and the 20th on the way, all in open access, the journal has been consolidating its position, having been indexed in ERIH PLUS in 2018 and in Scopus in 2022. Since 2021, the year it joined Open Journal Systems, the average monthly number of views of its articles has tripled. Between 2023 and 2024, Scimago rose it from Q4 to Q2, and Scopus’ CiteScore rose from 0.2 to 0.3.
Without placing too much importance on these metrics, which are volatile, Sandra Ataíde Lobo, one of the journal’s editor-in-chief, is nevertheless satisfied. ‘I believe that this development proves that the founding team, which I joined halfway through, was right in considering that their project would make a positive contribution to theorisation and debate around historiography and the construction of public memories.,’ she tells us. In addition to Sandra Ataíde Lobo (CHAM), the editorial team includes José Miguel Ferreira (IHC) and Matheus Serva Pereira (ICS), who took over the coordination of the journal in 2023, after the tenure of Pedro Martins (2020-2023).
As stated on the official website of Práticas da História, ‘the main aim of the journal is the promotion of discussions on historical theory, historiography, and the uses of the past’, also attaching ‘equal importance to research relating the practice of history with other domains of the humanities and to works debating history in the context of the social sciences’. Articles are published at no cost to authors, contributing to the mission of promoting open access to science by the research centres that created the journal.
