Exhibition about Health in World War I returns
Feb 7, 2020 | News
The exhibition From the Trenches to the Hospital: Portugal, Health and the Great War will reopen, now further South, in Sintra, at the São João de Deus Museum, with the opening scheduled for 20 February.
With the mobilization of more than 100,000 men for the Great War, the young Portuguese Republic hoped to obtain international recognition and protect African colonies from British and German interests. Paradoxically, the war sparked technical and scientific advances in health, but it also forever marked the lives of many men, who returned with physical and psychological trauma, and who quickly fell by into oblivion. The exhibition used objects, photographs, and videos to report this double impact of the Great War on health in Portugal.
With, once again, the scientific curatorships of Helena da Silva and José Picas do Vale, and the exhibition will be open to visitors, with free admission, between 21 February and 30 April, from 9AM to 5PM, by prior appointment to the email museum@isjd.pt.
