Quintino Lopes wins an APHES award
Nov 19, 2018 | News

Quintino Lopes received the APHES – Portuguese Association of Economic and Social History prize for International Publications by Young Researchers, for his article “The National Education Board (1929-36) and scientific research in Portugal“, published in the Portuguese Journal of Social Science, in 2017.
The scientific paper is part of the work that Quintino Lopes developed for his PhD Thesis and focuses on the history of the National Education Board. As the author explains, “it was a work that allowed the organisation and dissemination of knowledge about the activity of the National Board of Education (1929-36), revealing how the first institution in Portugal to plan and finance scientific research promoted scientific practices comparable to European and with internationally recognized quality”.
For Quintino, this award “represents the recognition of new research agendas for the History of Science, which, in particular regarding the study of scientific practices and policies in the Estado Novo, can introduce new questions and interpretive readings.”
The prize was awarded last Friday, 16 November, during the XXXVIII APHES Meeting, under the theme “The gender in economic and social history”, which took place at the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon. Several researchers from the IHC also participated in this meeting.
