IV International Colloquium on Political Violence in the Twentieth Century

In March 2015, the International Colloquium on Political Violence in the Twentieth Century was held at the Institute of Contemporary History (IHC) of the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa. The meeting was supposed to draw attention to the crucial role of violence in political and social conflicts that shaped the twentieth century. Another purpose was to broaden the perspective on various forms of political violence. The presence of a large number of historians and scholars from other areas of the humanities and social sciences encouraged thought-provoking debate, and led to the creation of the International Network on Political Violence. Since then, this network has been organizing biennial colloquiums. In June 2017, the meeting in Niterói (Brazil) was hosted by the Centre for Contemporary Studies (NEC) of the Universidade Federal Fluminense. In April 2019, the colloquium was held at Universidad Nacional de Rosario (Argentina). It took place under the auspices of the Network for Studies of Repression and Political Violence (RER) and coincided with the IV Working Sessions of the RER. In order to continue this enriching scholarly exchange, the IV International Colloquium on Political Violence in the Twentieth Century will be held in Barcelona from 16 to 18 June 2021.

Thematic core areas

  • Armed conflicts
Twentieth-century wars are definitely no longer just conflicts between armies. They affect entire populations, who find themselves either under occupation or in the rear. Occupation usually has a strong effect on the resilience of defeated armies and the civilian population (concentration camps, forced labour, etc.). Occupying forces seek to benefit from the resources of occupied countries in order to boost their war effort. In the rear, governments aim to suppress any dissent that might affect internal unity. Thus, the exercise of violence tends to grow exponentially..
  • State and state-sponsored violence
In addition to repressive legal practices controlled by justice systems, states (especially undemocratic ones) draw on a whole set of illegal practices, which consist of covert activity of state agencies and security forces, and the use of networks of formal and informal civilian collaborators, who can be either part of co-ordinated activities or act autonomously.
  • Riots and armed uprisings
Violence by non-state actors has been a constant feature of conflicts throughout the twentieth century. This thematic core area aims to bring together contributions that study all kinds of political and social violence of this particular type: from riots and insurrections to guerrillas and other instances of armed violence.
  • Gender and political violence
Recently, the gender perspective has become increasingly important in the study of different contemporary phenomena. Research related to political violence is certainly part of this trend. This thematic core area is supposed to bring together contributions that take on this perspective, e. g. studies focusing on violence against women and research concerned with women participating and taking the lead in violent practices.
  • Memory, conflict resolution, justice and reparation
In societies with traumatic and violent historical experiences, the process of public memory building is an area of dispute, and occasionally of consensus. The debate about the politics of public memory is an expression of these tensions. At the same time, various mechanisms of conflict resolution help overcome these experiences and their effects, as do the measures of transitional justice and reparation for victims. This thematic core area will include contributions related to this broad topic.
