Health Archives and Digital Humanities between the present and the future

The International interdisciplinary conference “Health Archives and Digital Humanities between the present and the future” will be held in Viterbo, Santa Maria in Gradi, 3-4 October, 2019. The Conference is organized by University of Tuscia, Department of Human Sciences, of the Comunication and Turism (DISUCOM), interdisciplinary Research Unit devoted to History and Social Science, by the Institute of Contemporary History, NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities (IHC-NOVA FCSH), a multidisciplinary Institute that is dedicated to the field of Contemporary History and by Interdepartmental Center for Studies and Research for Innovation, Digitization, Internationalization and Management (CEIDIM) University of Macerata.

Call for papers

The progressive digitalization of documents and the dematerialisation of processes, pursued both by the European Union and by non-European countries as a necessary phase to stimulate innovation, economic growth and the development of online services could not fail to affect healthcare facilities.

The substitution of traditional paper documents with digital entities equivalent in legal terms, but substantially different in terms of consistency, editing/drafting, signing, archiving and preservation, is happening with not a few difficulties and perplexities of stakeholders.

An intense change management activity is therefore necessary which, through the training of all the “actors” involved, creates the critical capacity to use IT tools correctly and consciously at a time when digital transfer is not yet completed and there are still many documents on paper.

The heterogeneity of the types and supports of documents makes it essential to carefully regulate current management and durable conservation methods. In particular, the dematerialisation of documents was mainly carried out in the clinical-health field rather than in the administrative one due to the presence of systems, mainly diagnostic, prepared for the production of reports and images already originally in digital form.

From the deepening conducted and from the data collected on the planned investments it is clear that the spread of dematerialization in this area is intended to increase in the immediate future.

Channelling this process into compatible archival banks was not always successful. In the long history of health care these archives can turn out to be fruitful granaries for clinical studies, teaching, etc. whose usability is increasingly required.

In a national and international social context in which, with ever increasing speed, the dynamics and techniques of information dissemination change, it appears decisive to study new strategies for the promotion and communication of health assets.

Today, more than in the past, there is a need for a comparison with the multiple forms of communication present in contemporary society that, in recent years, hand in hand with technological innovation, are revealing new and exciting potential and fields of application always more diversified.

For this reason, in addition to traditional communication, it is appropriate and useful to look at the so-called new media, capable of reaching large sections of the public without space-time limits. There are still many questions about the effectiveness of modern forms of communication, but one fact is certain: an administration must accept the confrontation with these new dynamics, since they are the sensor of a different demand for information, more evolved and conscious.

The interweaving of different methodologies and research fields is hoped to give rise to a reflection on some of the most important point that marked the Archives history of the twentieth century, and which characterize the present time and the future.

We invite you to join us at the event in Viterbo and would like to emphasize that proposals from different parts of the world are welcomed.

Guidelines

We welcome papers on any topic related to Health Archives, but we are also interested in hosting panels and strands on the following area:

New documentary forms and problems for the management and conservation of archives in electronic health: Production of electronic documents in electronic health and their organization in digital archives; construction of digital archives and platforms on which to insert them to make them usable. Preservation of documents that are already created in digital format and their legibility over time; treatment of hybrid archives.

Digital health archives: Limits, perspectives, repercussions that this technological revolution will have on and for the study of social, legal-administrative, environmental and health sciences, but also on society itself.

Communicate the heritage: recovery, enhancement and communication of the health archives: recovery of the historical archives of the institutions that over time have carried out tasks of assistance and treatment of diseases and their enhancement; use of these fertile fields for clinical, study and teaching occurrences; development of information systems for health history research.

Abstract Guidelines
