Research Groups // History, Territory and Environment

  • Coordination:
    Luís Espinha da Silveira
  • Objectives:

    We will give special attention to the importance of space in the interpretation of historical phenomena, which is a refreshing area for research in the social sciences as in the humanities. This perspective has been present in our work for many years.

    As it is strengthened in the report of 2011, we adopt a perspective of innovative analysis coupled with the application of digital methodologies in historical research; We focus our work in the long nineteenth century, without neglecting the long-term analysis, essential for the understanding of historical phenomena covering a large number of objects: politics, institutions, the economy, individuals, groups and the environment; develop research on diversified spaces (the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal, Portuguese colonial Territories), in a comparative perspective and /or transnational dimension; We have a strong commitment to interdisciplinarity.

    Areas of work: Portugal in the European area; Portugal and the Colonial Territories; Environmental history; Digital History

    Vision: Being a group of research recognized both nationally as internationally in its thematic areas of research (Portugal in the European area; Portugal and the colonial Territories; Environmental history; Digital History).

    Objectives: Without neglecting their insertion in the national context, the Group assumes internationalization as priority pursuing the following aims:

    Development of research by

    attracting national and international projects;

    preparation of master and doctoral theses and by facilitating the integration of students in teaching and research networks and participation in national and international scientific events;

    Training of young researchers;

    Application of new methodologies and development of digital tools in cooperation with other scientific areas, paying special attention, in particular, to the SIG and to databases;

    Dissemination of knowledge through the publication of books and articles in national and international journals indexed in reference databases, especially in Web of Science, Scopus, ERIH (INT1 and INT2) and Scielo; organization of and participation in conferences;

    Compilation and publication of relevant unpublished sources;

    Establishing partnerships with national and foreign groups with similar interests.
