Raquel Varela | Internationalism against free circulation; Welfare State against social Assistance: can history help us to built a left program against extreme-right?

Alex Callinicos | ‘The Crisis of Globalization in Historical Perspective’ – discussing the present crisis of hegemony (the crash and Trump/Bolsonaro/Salvini) with some comparisons with the 1890s and 1930s and using Gramsci as a theoretical framework.

Roberto della Santa | Brazil, how did we get to this point?, crisis from above, critics from below – Making sense of Bolsonaro catastrophe, understanding this global organic crisis

About the speakers:

Lucia Pradella is a Senior Lecturer in International Political Economy at King’s College London. She has published extensively on imperialism, migration, the working poor in Europe and struggles in logistics. Her more recent books are Globalization and the Critique of Political Economy: New Insights from Marx’s Writings (Routledge) and Polarizing Development: Alternatives to Neoliberalism and the Crisis (Pluto, co-edited with Thomas Marois). She is co-editor of the forthcoming Routledge Handbook of Marxism and Post-Marxism.

Raquel Varela is a historian, researcher and university professor. Her main areas of interest are global labour history, history of labour relations, and contemporary history of Portugal. Universidade NOVA de Lisboa / Institute of Contemporary History and Fellow of the International Institute for Social History (Amsterdam).

Alex Callinicos is Professor of European Studies at King’s College London and editor of International Socialism. His most recent books are Imperialism and Global Political Economy, Bonfire of Illusions: The Twin Crises of the Liberal World, and Deciphering Capital: Marx’s Capital and Its Destiny. He is co-editor of the forthcoming Routledge Handbook of Marxism and Post-Marxism.

Roberto della Santa is lecturer of sociological theory at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro and international correspondent of RDP Internacional. Member of Niep-Marx Research Group at Universidade Federal Fluminense. Post-doctoral researcher in global labour history at Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
